The Sterling Fire Department inspects businesses annually for fire code violations. This is done for the safety of the employees as well as the patrons. The inspections were put on hold last year with the outbreak of COVID-19. Now that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, inspections will resume this month (June 2021).
We have received questions as to why the entire shift has to come with the big red truck. There are a couple of reasons for this, first, we want each member to be familiar with the layout of each business. If there is an emergency after-hours, firefighters need to be able to navigate the building on their own (this is usually done in the dark and in full gear). Second, firefighters bring the big red truck because that is what they drive. They need to be able to respond to an emergency at all times from all locations and all together.
These inspections are a part of the Life Safety Code and the International Building Codes that have been adopted by the City of Sterling.
